She is Me - Tapping into the Power of Women

What it Means to be Among My “She-roes”

When Lori Sokol asked me if I would be interviewed for her book, “She is Me,” I was honored. Her book includes many of my “she-roes”: Gloria Steinem, Billie Jean King, Leymah Gbowee, Jamia Wilson, Carol Jenkins, and 25 others, many of whom I know personally.

I was also a little overwhelmed. Which parts of my life would be the most relevant and interesting?

As I thought about it and tried to prepare for my interview with her, something clicked. I realized what I have in common with the women in the book is that everything they do is to change not only today, but also to create a better future.

My life is always in forward motion – finding new ways to improve my business, learning from my mistakes, working toward gender and racial equity, speaking out on the intersection of business, philanthropy, activism, and building new relationships. That’s probably one of the reasons I enjoy the fashion business so much. It’s always about the future and about change.

Lori’s book, while about the lives of these inspiring women, is really more about what women are doing today to change tomorrow. That’s something we all have the power to do.
